Town Information
The second largest city in Portugal and the home of the world famous Port wine. Porto, in the north of the country, was a European City of Culture in 2001 and its old centre is a Unesco World Heritage Site. The best bars and restaurants are to be found in the Ribeira district on the bank of the river Douro, where you'll find some lively nightlife. Just to the south, you can visit port-wine lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia. There are two main football clubs in the town - FC Porto and Boavista. The former are one of Portugal's 'big three' and dominated the league in the 1990's. They play in blue and white stripes and their finest hour came in 1987 when they beat Bayern Munich to win the European Cup. Boavista have had to live in the shadow of their illustrious neighbour, but emerged dramatically in 2001 to win the league in their distinctive black and white chequed shirts.
